What is McTimoney chiropractic?
The McTimoney technique is a British adjustment method, found almost exclusively in the UK. It is a whole-body protocol every time and does not involve any twisted-up positions or ‘cracking’ sounds. The adjustments are performed using light, incredibly quick, low force movements. The patient gets to lie comfortably, in a relaxed state, face up or face down as the treatment takes place.
It feels very different to having a standard adjustment — slower, more measured and more comprehensive. That’s not to say it is a better technique; it is just very different.
The aftereffects can also be very different; there is usually no discomfort after a treatment. Some people may feel achey in places where their body is responding to the changes that were made, but this lasts no longer than 24–48 hours. Most people just feel incredibly relaxed, like a weight has been lifted, or occasionally energised. Children are often calmer and sleep better after a McTimoney adjustment.
Because the technique is low-force, it is often well suited to people who feel anxious about treatment, to older patients, and to those with hypermobility or other sensitivities.
